(series Memorie/dossier)

The aim of the dossier is to acquaint the wider world beyond the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and also among non-specialists, with Osmače and Brežani, the two small villages on the plateau above Srebrenica which together were awarded the Carlo Scarpa Prize for 2014.

This place in Eastern Bosnia and its geographical, historical and cultural context are described and evoked from different points of view, starting with those of people who have courageously chosen, after years of exile as refugees, to return and live there, reconstructing the fabric of individual and collective memory despite the grave difficulties and the fact that the signs of the devastation wrought by the 1991-1995 war are still all too visible.

The texts and the illustrations introduce us to the situations that have generated the energy required to take the decision to return and to choose working the land as the means to a revival of inter-ethnic dialogue and the co-existence of different cultures.

A further aim of the dossier is to help to raise awareness of the priceless network of ideal and practical assistance and support, stemming from the maieutic role played by the Alexander Langer Foundation, by Tuzlanska Amica and by Adopt Srebrenica, which underpins the efforts and hopes of the individuals directly involved. Other contributions provide accounts of projects to revive agricultural, forestry and stockbreeding activities in the Drina Valley (Podrinje) region.
