“Personal archives”, especially those assembled in the xx century, feature constituent elements, modes of formation and traditions that make them particularly complex examples of the documentary heritage. They are also, and increasingly, subject to high risks of neglect and dispersal.

The need to create an overview of the situation and to devise shared operational procedures in order to safeguard them and raise awareness of their value has found expression in a single project set up by two cultural institutions, the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche and the Fondazione Giuseppe Mazzotti per la civiltà veneta, for which the preservation of historical memory, and therefore of archives, has always been a central issue. One part of the project involves the planning and organization of an opportunity for professional exchange and debate, a cycle of seminars entitled Archivi di persona del Novecento. Guida alla sopravvivenza di autori, documenti e addetti ai lavori (XX century personal archives. Guide to the survival of authors, documents and experts in the field), the material of which, revised and updated by the authors, comprises the main contents of this volume; the other part of the project takes the form of research, initially an experimental phase confined to the Province of Treviso, designed to identify and map the existence of these archives within public and private institutions; a brief report of this first part of the work, which involved the Veneto Regional administration as well as the two foundations, is published as an appendix to the volume.
