A Pill to purge Melancholie

concert with Friederike Heumann, viola da gamba
, from
auditorium della Fondazione Benetton

Viola da gamba takes the centre stage of the concert season offered by the Early music at casa Cozzi project, organised by Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche and by almamusica433.

In fact, Friday 28 April at 9pm, the concert A Pill to purge Melancholie is scheduled in the auditorium of spazi Bomben in Treviso, with Friederike Heumann.

For the first time in Treviso, the celebrated German performer will share with the audience the history and evolution of an instrument which, initially appreciated among the nobility because it was “easy to play”, so much so that it became its very symbol, was to turn into one of the sounds used by the masters Sainte Colombe, Bach and Abel to voice some of the most significant compositions in the history of music.

The title of the concert, A Pill to purge Melancholie, is inspired by one of the most significant collection of songs for voice and viola da gamba published in England in 1698. Setting off from 16th century English authors and from the folk music of the period, Friederike Heumann will lead the audience on a journey, finally landing on the shores of the works of Monsieur de Saint Colombe and the great Saxon authors.

Teacher at the Music Conservatory of Würzburg, student of Jordi Savall and Paolo Pandolfo at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the musician will present a programme that uses the important detuning technique of the viola da gamba to achieve unexpected effects and change the very timbre of the instrument. In addition to the viola da gamba, she will perform with the lyra viola, a special, smaller viol, used for the earliest repertoires of English music.

The event will be introduced, Thursday 20 April at 6:30pm, by a listening guide with maestro Stefano Trevisi, the project’s artistic director, who will paint a portrait of the musician and offer precious keys to fully appreciate the repertoire and the peculiarities of the instrument.

In the two days following the concert, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April, Friederike Heumann will be in residence at casa Luisa e Gaetano Cozzi (the country house of Fondazione Benetton in Zero Branco, Treviso), to teach a master class. An opportunity for students and fans to be face to face with the great performer in the viola da gamba masterclass.
